How to Choose Between Conventional and Synthetic Oil

August 20, 2020

When it comes to choosing the appropriate oil for your car’s engine, there are many choices. Pugh’s Tire and Service Centers are here to help you understand which oil is best for your vehicle! There are two main types of motor oil which are synthetic and conventional. Conventional oil is used in most vehicles and should be changed at least twice a year. Synthetic oil is best for high-tech engines used for multiple short trips and longer-lasting performance.

Conventional Oil

Conventional motor oil is a lubricant that is derived directly from crude oil. It provides lubrication at high temperatures while maintaining its stability over long periods of time. Conventional oil is cost-effective, better for older motors, and a popular form of oil for various brands. However, conventional oil may not become warm enough to burn off moisture and impurities which can deplete the protection of your vehicle’s engine. Synthetic oil can serve greater miles and hold up better.

Synthetic Oil

Synthetic lubricants are derived from completely synthetic compounds such as petroleum-based products or other organic oils. Synthetic oil differs from conventional oil because of unique polymers added to the base formulation. Synthetic oil is not required or even recommended for all vehicles. In fact, synthetic oil is recommended for high-tech engines for longer-lasting performance. It is designed to be more effective at resisting breakdown while withstanding high temperatures. Synthetic oil is best for standard motors used for multiple short trips and to help engines that are prone to sludge build-up. Sludge build-up is formed when oil breaks down and blocks the flow of the oil. This can lead to the engine dying quickly. If you live somewhere with extremely cold winters or extremely hot summers, we recommend using synthetic oil. We also recommend using synthetic oil if you use your vehicle for towing or hauling heavy material as it holds up better
